SE North Carolina

Made it to Wilmington, NC tonight, the 13th, just ahead of a storm. Tomorrow, after crossing the mouth of the Cape Fear River and a little more, will be in SC.
Don from northern VA that I met yesterday morning in Ocracoke as we boarded the ferry, is headed for Tampa and needs to do 85 to 105 miles per day. I hung with him yesterday but we agreed to go our seperate ways and routes. I wish you well Don.

Tonight I am enjoying the hospitality of Diane and Darren, Young Life friends, and close friends of our Vermont Area Director Jeff S.

Spring is clearly here---leaves and blossoms and grass mowing. Can hay fever be far behind?

By the way, it isn't my butt or my hands that hurt as I thought would be the case, it is my toes! Cramps in the toes. Who's a thought.

  1. Dad - This is great. I am late in getting onto this site and it seems you are almost there. Great pictures. 85 miles! Stretch your toes everynight. Warm soaks and gentle massage. Keep them warm even thought it may be warm outside. Wear loose shoes when not on the bike.

  2. kjm has good advice. Massage (even road side massages) are often the best and only way to alleviate the pain. I wonder if it's the same pain I've experienced. Is it on the metatarsals and metatarsal phalangeal joints - the outside of your foot (small toes) or maybe it's the lateral plantar nerve and a combination of digital nerves? Check out a foot diagram on the web. There are tons if you google "foot anatomy".

    I ended up buying bike shoes that are one size too big. That helped some but after 60+ miles the cramps return and it's hard to track them. Sometimes they're worse when you stop pedaling for a while and they they disappear without a trace and return 5-10 miles later. I have a similar pain after a long day of cross-country skiing.

    These old bodies just don't work as well as those 20 & 30 year old specimens do they? And you even have 15 years on me so I'd say your old frame is working incredibly well.

  3. OUCH. Are you going through Charleston? Connor has a similar problem, when his legs or feet hurt, he needs a bottle of chocolate milk? Maybe that will help. I prefer Sam Adams spring brew myself.

  4. Great Job big brother...you are the greatest. Hope your feet ease up so you can enjoy the ride. Been worrying about the bad front coming across the southeast last night and today but hopefully it will be out to sea south of you. I am enjoying your blogs...a great idea. I'll have several Guinness ready for you when you get here. Love jack

  6. toe cramps? I didn't know those were a real thing. Well I am sure Kevin's advice will fix you up.
    Also, I have told a couple of friends that you are biking down here. After we get past that this is a pedal bike and that you are 65 their disbelief is very funny.

  7. Sorry we missed your time in Wilmington - Jason, Danielle, and I arrived back in town on Sunday evening and would have enjoyed crossing paths with you again. :) We're praying for your continued health and safety. What a fantastic family story this will be through the years!

  8. Hi all and thanks for the advice about my toes. When I can I go to the jacuzzi at the pool or take a hot bath. Seems to help. I will post a real blog with a photo or two later--I am in Conway, SC on tax day.
